Deposit Plus is a structured product issued by HSBC in Hong Kong market that consists of a time deposit (in the deposit currency) and selling of a put option on the linked currency of your choice. The temptation of this product is that, while the conventional interest rate of time deposit in Hong Kong is around 0.001% p.a., the Deposit Plus interest rate provides around 13%–14% p.a. This is more than 10000 times of conventional interest rate just looking the number for the quoted interested rate. The detailed description is here (link). Then is it just really amazing investment opportunity as of the first look? Is there any professional/academic comment?
